Abstract

An extraction technique is described for the separation of iron- and calcium-bound phosphate. The iron-bound phosphate is extracted with a 0.05 M solution of Ca-NTA under reducing conditions. Iron, also, is brought into solution, which is an advantage over the NaOH extraction. The calcium-bound phosphate is extracted with a 0.05 M solution of Na-NTA. The NTA also extracts humic compounds. Organic phosphate compounds can be measured in the NTA extracts, unlike the NaOH or H2SO4 extracts such as are used in the (modified) Jackson procedure.
