Abstract

Chloramphenicol and actinomycin D produced opposite effects on the in vivo protein synthesis by the hepatopancreas of the crustacean Upogebia littoralis. Inhibition of protein synthesis was noted within 6 hours after administration of chloramphenicol; maximum inhibition occurred 8 hours after treatment. No inhibition was noted after administration of actinomycin D; on the contrary, this antibiotic appeared to slightly stimulate protein synthesis as measured by rate of C14-leucine incorporation, within 6 to 8 hours after treatment.
