Abstract

Anemias are classified on the basis of size of the RBCs. In this scheme, the microcytic anemias are defined as those in which the mean cell volume is <80fL. This review describes the common types–iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, anemia of chronic inflammation, and sideroblastic anemia–as well as the clinical and laboratory findings in each. Diagnosis depends on the CBC, cell morphology (as observed on the peripheral blood smear), and, in rare cases, the bone marrow findings. Levels of iron, total iron binding capacity, free erythrocyte protoporphyrin, and ferritin in serum, as well as electrophoretic separation of hemoglobins may also be included.
