Abstract

Surgical procedures on the cardiovascular system have salvaged the lives of an increasing number of patients with congenital heart disease, and the need for accurate diagnosis has increased correspondingly. Keeping pace with these desirable developments poses genuine problems for the practicing physician. He is obliged to depend upon familiar clinical diagnostic methods for the most part, yet he must know when to supplement with cardiac catheterization, angiocardiography, dye-dilution methods, and other new techniques. He must know when the risk of omitting a diagnostic procedure exceeds its intrinsic danger and vice versa. Resolution of these alternatives and demonstration of the contribution of all the diagnostic methods in the accurate identification of congenital heart disease is the mission of Hans Baer's translation of Differential Diagnosis of Congenital Heart Disease by Schad, Kuenzler, and Onat of Zurich.
