Abstract
Basic to all approaches in diagnosis of arthritis are a complete medical history and a full physical examination. Laboratory studies can be helpful, but their limitations must be recognized. Early, accurate diagnosis depends to a large extent on knowledge of the clinical features distinguishing the different rheumatic diseases.
