Abstract

Abstract Steam distillation for differentiation of inorganic mercury and alkylmercury, connected to mercury measurement by flameless atomic absorption spectrometry, was effective and suitable for river sediments. Sulfur in sediments interfered in the determination, but increasing the hydrochloric acid concentration in the procedure eliminated the interference. With this technique down to 2.5 ppb of mercury in sediment can be determined.
