Abstract

Electron and positron impact differential cross sections forexcitation of the 3s state of a hydrogen atom from its metastable 2sstate are calculated in a distorted wave approximation at 10 and 50eV.The effects of both adiabatic and non-adiabatic distortion of theatomic charge cloud by the incoming electron or positron are includedin the initial and final state wavefunctions. Contrary to an earlierprediction, no dramatic differences between the electron and positronresults are found.
