Abstract

A simple model, combining the Born approximation and classical perturbation theory, is derived for small- and moderate-angle scattering ( theta <or=60 degrees ) into all states. Agreement within 33% is obtained with close-coupling and Glauber calculations. Comparable agreement is obtained with the recoil measurements on CsF, CsCl and KI but poor agreement is found with the recent relative measurements on KI by Rudge, Trajmar and Williams (1976). Using a hard-sphere model for wide-angle scattering, simple formulae for the total and momentum-transfer cross sections into all states are derived.
