Abstract

Differential and total cross sections for excitation of the 2s and 2p state of hydrogen by proton impact are calculated using an expansion in two centre atomic orbitals and the impact parameter method. Results are obtained for both direct and transfer excitation. The energy range is 0.1 keV-5 keV and the influence of the momentum transfer is shown to be negligible in this energy range. Limitations of the method are discussed.
