Abstract

Two crossed beam experiments on Ne*(2p 53s, 3P 0,2)-He collisions are described. In the first one a cw tunable dye laser is used to perform a state and velocity selection of the metastable atoms. The elastic differential cross section in the c.m. frame is given for a collision energy of 64 meV. In the second experiment, the elastic total cross section is measured in absolute value, using a torsion pendulum for the determination of the target molecule density. Some discrepancy is found with the differential cross section calculated with existing potentials.
