Abstract

Abstract There are many different types of muscular dystrophy depending on distribution of predominantly affected muscle groups (Fig. 4.1), severity and prognosis, modes of inheritance, and genetic defects. It is possible on the basis of the distribution of predominant muscle wasting and weakness, along with certain other features, such as age at onset, to define at least eight major types of muscular dystrophy. Myotonic dystrophy is unique in so many ways that it should perhaps not really be considered a muscular dystrophy; it has been included here for completeness.
