Abstract

The present study examines the effects of workplace mood states on employee creativity. We specified workplace mood into four categories reflecting valence and activation based on the recent debate regarding the ambivalent effects of positive and negative mood on creativity and the significance of the activation level of a given mood. To further elucidate the mood-creativity relationship, we propose that the four kinds of mood states have distinct implications for proactive and responsive creativity. The current hypotheses are tested using data collected from 292 employees and 109 team leaders in Korean organizations. Our multilevel path-analytic model indicated that whereas positive activating mood increases proactive creativity via its indirect effects on ambiguity tolerance and team identification, negative activating mood promotes responsive creativity.
