Abstract

During the past 4 days after the terrorist attack on our country, I reflected numerous times on the different kinds of pain that people can experience. All of us involved in pain management have learned about and integrated into our clinical practice the multidimensional models of pain described by Ahles, Blanchard, and Ruckdeschel (1983) and McGuire (1992). In fact, pain assessment tools and protocols are constructed to provide us with guidance about how to assess the physiologic, sensory, affective, cognitive, behavioral, and sociocultural dimensions of pain.
