Abstract

Purpose: Electrostimulation (ES) is known for its beneficial effects in development and regeneration of different tissues, including cartilage. ES depolarizes cellular membrane, resulting in activation of voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC) responsible for intracellular calcium (iCa2+) influx, which is one of the most important signal transducers in cells, regulating their proliferation, differentiation and metabolism. Pulsed electrical stimulation (PES) uses higher electrical field, so it can not only permeabilize cell membrane and increase iCa2+ influx, but cause biological effects beyond the plasma membrane - promote cell proliferation and dedifferentiation. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the effect of ES-dependent chondrogenic responses in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) and chondrocytes.
