Abstract

The haemolytic action of HgCl2 (0.15 mmol) was studied in humans and rats in relationship to the ionic strength of NaCl in the incubating medium. Ionic strength changed from 0.0 to 154.0 mmol NaCl. The isotonicity was corrected with glucose. On the basis of ionic strength and amount of glucose present two haemolytic peaks were observed. The first at low concentrations of NaCl and high concentrations of glucose, the second at high concentrations of NaCl and low concentrations of glucose. Differences between human and rat erythrocytes were found at both haemolytic peaks. These differences can be explained on the basis of the lower sensitivity of rat erythrocytes to the stimulating effect of Na+ ions on the Na+ - K+ pump. Also a lower utilisation of glucose with the pump is proposed in rats.
