Abstract

The response of adult male German cockroaches to substances secreted by crowded adult females varied with female age and intensity of crowding. Secretions by moderately crowded females tended to become progressively more attractive during the first 5 d postecdysis. Those from 6- to 7-d-old females were strongly repellent, which indicates secretion of the dispersant pheromone. Under extremely crowded conditions, 3-d-old females also secreted the dispersant, but repellency was less than that of similarly crowded 7-d-old females.
