Abstract

Purpose: Adherence to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) breastfeeding recommendations (breastfeed exclusively for 6 months, and continue at least 1 year, as complementary foods are introduced) is lower among teen (13-19 years) versus older mothers (≥20 years). Teen mothers may face unique challenges that require additional support to follow breastfeeding recommendations. Hospitals can support mothers to breastfeed by implementing evidence-based maternity practices and discontinuing practices that are detrimental to breastfeeding.
