Abstract

Purpose: Hip strength (abduction and extension) and dynamic balance are lower bilaterally in people with unilateral knee osteoarthritis (KOA) compared to healthy controls. Exercise programs that include hip exercises have demonstrated superior outcomes in pain, function and dynamic balance in people with KOA, with these outcomes mediated by the type of hip exercise employed e.g. resistive or neuromuscular. The ideal type and dose of exercises for greatest benefit in pain and function for people with KOA is largely unknown.
