Abstract

The difference method for measuring the average energy of relativistic collimated particles by means of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation is described. This method implies that particle energy must be determined by the difference of emission angles of Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation, which arises when particles pass through two plane-parallel radiators placed in optical contact. The calculation formulas for determining the particle average energy and the errors in its measurement are given. An example of calculating the dependence of the errors δβ of particle velocity determination on δ( Δr), the errors of the angular difference measurement, is shown. The accuracy attainable using this method, e.g., for the β = 0.875 protons, can be ∼1.2 MeV.
