Abstract

The effect of diet supplemented with Artemisia capillaris extract at 0% (control), 0.1%, 1.0%, and 2.0% levels in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) against Edwardsiella tarda was studied at weeks 1, 2, and 4; on weeks 2 and 4 phagocytic activity and myeloperoxidase content were significantly enhanced. The lysozyme activity, bactericidal activity, and total protein levels were significantly elevated with any enriched diet against pathogen. The complement activity, antiprotease activity, and α2-macroglobulin level significantly increased with 1.0% and 2.0% supplemented diet from weeks 1 to 4 while the respiratory burst activity increased significantly on weeks 2 and 4. The minimum cumulative mortality of 25% was recorded in fish fed with 2.0% diet against pathogen. However, the mortality increased to 35% and 45% on being fed with 1.0% and 0.01% diet. This study suggests that diet enriched with A. capillaris extract at 1.0% or 2.0% level can potentially modulate the innate immune system in P. olivaceus against E. tarda infection.
