Abstract

A Food Check List (FCL) was developed and tested as a quick method to determine adequacy of a cancer patients' dietary intake. The FCL was based on food groups of the Food Guide Pyramid modified by calorie and protein values of the Exchange Lists for Meal Planning. Food intake for 34 male hematology/oncology inpatients was assessed by the FCL and by a computer nutrient analysis program. FCL-Exchange List values averaged 1360 + 807 kcal and 54 + 33 g protein; computer values, 1346 + 810 kcal, 53 + 33 protein (r = .99). Sixty-seven percent of the patents consumed <1600 kcal and <66 g protein. FCL sensitivity to low and high mealtime intakes suggests times that treatments might interfere with food tolerance and the need for antiemetic medication.
