Iron is an important mineral nutrient necessary for the synthesis of haemoglobin and enzymes such as haeme enzymes in the body [1]
The Nigeria Food Consumption Survey (NFCS) conducted in 2003, which highlights the prevalence of iron deficiency among different age groups and different geographical regions in Nigeria, has been shown to be the only nationally representative survey providing data on the prevalence of iron deficiency in Nigeria
Based on serum ferritin concentrations, iron deficiency in Nigeria was determined in the NFCS using the cut-off values given in the (Table 3) [42]
Summary
