Abstract

Studies of fibre have begun to define specific aspects of the physiology of the gut in relation to gut function, nutrient absorption and subsequent metabolic effects. In metabolic terms they have suggested possible new approaches to the management of a range of disorders, such as diabetes, the dumping syndrome, hyperlipidemia and obesity. Of these, dietary advice in relation to diabetes has been most influenced by studies and hypotheses in relation to the action of dietary fibre.
