Abstract

Summary Increased attention is being directed to the possible link between aspects of diet and behavioural or learning problems in children. Food intolerance is discussed and differentiated from food allergy and food aversion. Studies reviewed have produced inconsistent findings despite cogent claims for the significance of additives or allergens. Reference is also made to a number of studies which have explored the association between diet and measured ability. It is concluded that the link between components of diet and specific aspects of behaviour or scholastic ability has not been proven. However, it has not been disproven either, and it is difficult to disregard the accumulating findings for the impact of diet even if based upon single case studies or research using arguably flawed methodology.
