Abstract

The theme of Service appears in several of the New Delhi documents. The report of the section on Service is the most important, but is weak from a doctrinal and theological standpoint. It surveys a series of practical problems but remains somewhat undecisive on many aspects of the underlying doctrine. By comparison to the Evanston documents referring to themes of Service, the New Delhi Assembly showed hesitancy to formulate clear Christian norms for the organisation of society. In this way, the New Delhi Assembly reflects the international political situation as much as, and perhaps more than, the committed thought of the Orthodox and the Protestant Churches.
