Abstract

The diencephalon of the cat has been explored using a standard stimulus. Points facilitating and points inhibiting the jaw opening reflex have been found which do not necessarily affect other somatic reflexes in any regular fashion. The major part of the hypothalamus is inhibitory to reflex jaw opening. Facilitatory points are found in the ventral thalamus, zona incerta, fields of Forel, internal capsule and cerebral peduncle. Inhibition of reflex jaw opening is regularly associated only with reduced digastric electromyographic activity and not with any single pattern of change in temporalis activity. Complete reversal of the jaw opening reflex may be obtained.
