Abstract

Investigations of a single hydrogen bonded liquid crystals are made between alkyloxy benzoic acids (x-BOA) and alkyloxy benzoic acids (y-BOA) and are discussed in the present investigation. Type of mesogenic phases exhibited are visualized and recorded with the help of a Polarizing Optical Microscopy (POM). Conventional phases such as ‘Nematic’ (Nematic droplets, ‘Schlieren’ or threaded textures, four brush textures), ‘Smectic C’ (Schlieren and broken focal conical texture), ‘Smectic F’ (chequered board texture) and ‘Smectic G’ (multi colored smooth mosaic texture) are observed. Newly investigated textural phases viz., ‘Smectic X’ (‘worm’ like texture) is also characterized to elucidate their structure. Phase diagrams are constructed to study in detail the thermal stability, occurrence and thermal span of the phases as a function of the chemical constitution of hydrogen bonded (HB) complexes. Thermal analysis include analysis of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) thermograms, study of the order of the transition by Navard & Cox parameter and construction of the relevant phase diagrams. Electrical attempts include measurement of permittvity and dielectric loss with respect to the electrical stimulus applied and light intensity profile analysis.
