Abstract

An apparatus for the measurement of the effect of high electric fields on the dielectric constant of liquids has been modified to accept rectangular voltage pulses with rise and fall times of less than 50 μs. The mode of operation of this apparatus is compared with that for the pulsed electric birefringence technique. The limitations of the technique are discussed with reference to Joule heating and bandwidth considerations.
