Abstract

Dielectric constants at frequencies less than 103 Hz of surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals with the quasi-bookshelf structures were smaller than those with the chevron structure. Externally applied DC electric fields monotonously decreased the dielectric constants of SSFLC with the chevron structure at frequencies less than 103 Hz but not those of the quasi-bookshelf structure. The DC electric fields did not change the electrooptical responses of the chevron structure but markedly improved those of the quasi-bookshelf structure.
