Abstract

The impulse breakdown voltage of Perspex having sphere-plane electrodes is lower than the direct breakdown voltage. Prestressing with direct voltage increases the impulse breakdown voltage in direct proportion to the prestressing voltage. The results are discussed in terms of a space charge injected in the region of high field stress, the polarity of the charge being the same as that of the adjacent electrode and the magnitude being proportional to the applied voltage.
