Abstract
It is known that the type of separator influences antimony poisoning of lead storage cells. Radioactive Sb124 was used to study the processes leading to poisoning. It was found that a suitable separator can confine high fluctuations of the antimony level in the acid to the space of the positive plates, particularly during the charge-discharge cycles, and hence can reduce antimony poisoning of the negative plates. The applicability of a separator as antimony moderator can be characterized by the product of electric resistance and antimony diffusion coefficient. Favourable separators contain narrow bent capillaries, or they are constructed of semipermeable walls (wood separators) which are permeable for hydrogen ions but impermeable for antimony ions.In storage cells of practical design, a boundary region free of separators is put in parallel to the separators. When studying the effect of this boundary region it was found that it affects little the antimony migration in the case where mediocre or bad separators are used but that it limits the action of good separators.
