Abstract

Jesus spoke of himself as the truth in person - this is why theology is obliged to deal with the topic » truth «. Augustine, Anselm of Canterbury, Abaelard, Albert and Thomas all refer to it. There cannot be such a thing like two opposing criteria of truth. Following Augustine, Dietrich of Freiberg thinks of God as immutable truth which may, in this life, be conceived through the spirit. Through the unification of truth and soul, the latter achieves immortality. The truth of the sciences is immutable, for it is grounded in the eternal truth, i.e. God. This is a starting-point for the modern concept of science and truth. Truth is reflected in what is recognized; it recognizes itself. Thus, human truth is grounded in, and united with, the immutable truth.
