Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to determine the presentation and representation of the body metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12:1-31 and specifically the phrase μέλη άσθeνέστeρα in verse 22. This distinction must be borne in mind in order to validly interpret metaphors in the New Testament. In order to determine the presentation and representation, the pericope is analysed in terms of the grammatical-historical method of De Klerk and Janse van Rensburg (2004), as well as Van der Watt's (2000) method for the analysis of metaphors. The findings of the grammatical-historical study as well as the analysis of the body metaphor are then summarised. Lastly, conclusions regarding the presentation and representation of the body metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12:1-31, and specifically the phrase μέλη άσθeνέστeρα in verse 22, are formulated.
