Abstract
The author of the paper discusses the influence of tectonic forces on coal which is clearly shown by the structure of deformed coal seams. The succession of incoalation and deformation may be concluded from microscopical investigations. Recent studies on the optical anisotropy of coals show that this phenomenon was either caused by the weight of the overburden or by tectonic stress. The devolatilization of many coals is due to these two kinds of forces and may be used to estimate the approximate folding pressure.
