Abstract
SUMMARY This article investigates the historical roots of the television soap opera; problems regarding a clear definition of what actually constitutes the soap opera; and its generic conventions. The aim of the genre analysis is to identify those structural elements that stimulate viewers' involvement. An underlying assumption of this study is that an analysis of the generic conventions may give a possible explanation of the popularity of the soap opera and viewers' ‘addiction’ to this genre.
