Abstract

Cold drawing process is widely applied for seamless tube manufacturing. Die semi angle selection is one of the critical activities during cold drawing of seamless tubes for optimized performance especially in terms of springback and drawing force required. It is a complex problem involving qualitative and quantitative multi-criteria analysis. The purpose of this study is to adopt structured approach to select optimized die semi angle for cold drawing of seamless tubes. The study uses Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) based structured approach to select optimum die semi angle by estimating the overall performance score for different values of die semi angles. The outcome of this study suggests that 100 is better die semi angle for both ST 52 tube materiel and AISI D3 die and plug materials. The same results are validated using other optimization techniques and experimentation.
