Abstract

In his Octavius, Minucius Felix lets the sceptic Caecilius present the Delphic maxim γνοθ σαuτoν in a unique version: The well known formula appears extended by a comparative adverb, se familiarius nosse (Oct. 5,5). Semantically, this comparative has to be conceived of as qualifying the maxim's epistemological and ethical strictness in a sceptical sense. The essay deals with the philological aspects and philosophical implications of this kind of self-knowledge.
