Abstract

Against the background of the recent debate on democracy the author gives a critical outlood on the role of media in political participation and public opinion. Based on the case study of Tanzania some stereotype developments in traditional and mass media are shown from independance up to nowadays. Conceptual considerations in terms of development theory and their influence on the efficiency of political participation are reviewed and checked by own and collected empirical data. A rough sketch of a possible new definition of mass media and other communicators within the development of political will is given whereas the need for democratical transition is emphasized
