Abstract

In early 2012 the Bavarian State Library completes the retro conversion of the conventional catalogs of its East Asian collection. All Chinese, Japanese and Korean holdings are now researchable through the online catalog, through the Bavarian Union Catalog (»Gateway Bayern«) and through WorldCat. Nearly 166,000 catalog cards of East Asian holdings published before 1990 were processed and nearly 90,000 data records provided by an outside service were created both in the original form and in transcription. This article describes which procedures were followed at various phases of the project and the particular challenges presented by the retro conversion of these special catalogs. The project represents the final stage of the conversion of the Bavarian State Library's conventional alphabetical catalogs.
