Abstract

BackgroundFoot ulcerations are a common complication of diabetic foot syndrome, frequently leading to lower leg amputations. Materials and methodsPatients with diabetic foot syndrome and ulceration, treated between March 2009 and September 2011, were included in this retrospective study. The aim of this study was to assess, if the PEDIS classification system can be used as a predictor for wound healing and level of amputation. ResultsAccording to wound healing and amputation level PEDIS classification system has shown to be of significant predictive value. Mainly the cumulative value confirmed to be effective in estimating the amputation level (p=0.008). ConclusionCumulated PEDIS value was identified and verified as a predictor for amputation level. Larger, prospective studies have to validate this parameter for clinical relevance.
