Abstract

AbstractThe competitive thermal oxidation of a 6β‐hydroxy steroid (to a 6β, 19‐ether) and the thermal oxidative decarboxylation of various carboxylic acids by lead4+ was investigated. The alcohol oxidation is faster than acetate and benzoate oxidation, about as fast as the oxidative decarboxylation of higher primary carboxylic acids (propionic, butyric acid), and much slower than the oxidative decarboxylation of secondary and tertiary carboxylic acids.
