Abstract

Summary Music is generally set apart 11s one of the fundamental elements of the radio play. It can convey important infonnation to the listener, especially in the case of programmatic music. Chris Barnard's Die rebellie van Lafras Verwey uses principally Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite, which is based on a story by Tynyanov. This story is about a nonexistent lieutenant who lives, while a second, living lieutenant, is declared dead. The main character in the radio play is an outsider, a failure and an anti-hero who takes refuge regularly in a non-existent world in which he is exactly the opposite. The two Tynyanov characters are, to a great extent, telescoped in Lafras. The music is indicated not only in the side text, but it is ako embedded in the main text in an unorthodox manner: Lapas sings the music himself. This establishes the intertextual power of the music as textual element and, by evoking the complete Tynyanov story, heightens the irony of the radio play. In this work music activates a literar...
