Abstract

For more than 20 years, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has been sponsoring an editorial office at the Bavarian State Library in Munich which records German collections in the British Library's »Incunabula Short Title Catalogue« (ISTC). The impending completion of this enterprise prompts a review of the current situation of incunabula cataloguing on a local, regional and international level. In the past decade, an increasing number of projects for the digitization of early printed books have supplemented these often long-term cataloguing enterprises. With fundingfrom the DFG, more than 4,000 incunabula from the BSB's collections have been digitized since 2008. This article analyzes the implications for recording incunabula in union catalogues and local OPACs and for hyperlinking such resources, and outlines a coordinated strategy for the digitization of incunabula held in German libraries.
