Abstract

The structure of monoclinic basic copper nitrate (I) was determined by Patterson, trial and error, and Fourier methods. (I) is a typical layer structure, the Cu-atoms forming a pseudohexagonal net (001), being surrounded octahedrally by (4+2) OH or O with distances 2.00 to 2.35k X. The nitrate groups are almost perpendicular to the layers, one O lying in the OH-planes above and below the planes of the Cu-atoms. The structure is isotypical with basic copper bromide.
