Abstract

The stress patterns of Afrikaans and Dutch simplex words correspond to a large extent. However, a small percentage of words differ with regard to the placing of the main stress. The theoretical descriptions of this phenomenon in Afrikaans and Dutch are compared and the conclusion is reached that the Afrikaans description has a higher degree of descriptive and explanatory adequacy than its Dutch counterpart. This can be ascribed to a number of factors, some of which are dealt with in the article. It is furthermore demonstrated that the majority of shifts in stress patterns from Dutch to Afrikaans take place according to the main stress rule. This article indicates how these shifts provide strong support for the main stress rule for simplex words which forms the basis of the argument.

Booij (1981:163-166) gee slegs ’n informele beskrywing van die klemtoonpatroon van simplekse Nederlandse woorde, sodat dit slegs op ’n preteoretiese vlak kan dien as vergelykingsmateriaal met Afrikaans. Hy gee geen omvattende reel wat op Afrikaans toegepas sou kon word ten einde vas te stel presies hoe ver die ooreenkoms ten opsigte van die hele woordeskat strek nie. Hy lê wel ’n algemene reel neer dat by woorde met woordinisiële klemtoon (teenoor die groep woorde met woordfinale klemtoon) die hoofklem op die eerste beklemtoonbare vokaal val (Klemtoon op ’n sillabe word deurgaans aangedui deur middel van ’n enkelaanhalingsteken ná daardie sillabe.) Schwa ([a]) is volgens Booij die enigste onbeklemtoonbare vokaal in Nederlands - ’n reel wat nie vir Afrikaans geld nie). Die probleem met hierdie reel is egter dat dit nie duidelik is watter woorde verteenwoordigend van hierdie tipe (d.i. met woordinisiële klem­ toon) is nie. Dit is nie vanselfsprekend dat hierdie twee tipes woorde ook in Afrikaans bestaan nie, en indien wel, watter woorde behoort tot watter kategorie?
