Abstract

SYNOPSIS Seed from Podocarpus latifolius (Thunb.) R.Br. ex Mirb. was collected at the Saasveld Forestry Research Station and the large seeds were separated from the smaller seeds. The testas of 72% of the seed were cut. Germination percentages were compared. The effect of the following environmental variables on the growth of seedlings was investigated: a. Watering by automatic mist sprayer or by hand;b. shade intensities of 0%, 25%, 50% and 75%. Shoot length was the only parameter that showed the effect of both treatments. The average nitrogen content of the above-ground parts of the plants watered by hand was 85% higher than that of the plants grown under mist spray. The seedlings grown without shade and which were hand watered grew the best.
