Abstract
This chapter presents an overview on the imperial Rāṣṭrakūṭas. The so-called imperial Rāṣṭrakūṭas ruled over the western Deccan and the adjacent areas (Southeast Gujarat) from the middle of 8th century until the end of 10th century. The chapter discusses the copper plate inscription of Rāṣṭrakūṭas. This Rāṣṭrakūṭa kings are known only from inscriptions and from the copper plate records of their successors. The chapter discusses the names and epithets of Rāṣṭrakūṭas. The term Rāṣṭrakūṭa is found in the Sanskrit inscriptions from different regions in two contexts: first, as the name of a senior official, a type of provincial governor, and second, as a name of different dynasties. The chapter discusses the representation of the dynastic history of the Rāṣṭrakūṭas and focuses on the self-representation of the Rāṣṭrakūṭa-regent.
