Abstract

In 1872 Emil Du Bois-Reymond hold his famous speech about the limits of natural science in which he declared that natural science is in principal unable to answer the questions concerning the essence of mass and energy and the appearance of consciousness. The speech implied a critique of the present-day materialism and provoked negative as well as positive reactions. Among them are also those of contemporary Protestant theologians who used it to justify religious conception of the world which cannot be defeated by materialism.
