Abstract

The distribution of powers in the Swiss Confederation has a long tradition dating back to the time before 1798 but was also influenced by American constitutional law. Todayʹs attribution of competences has, however, departed considerably from its original model and largely resembles a functional division of tasks, with the legislative and governmental powers situated at the federal level and the administrative and judicial powers resting with the cantons.
