Abstract

HIV-1 evolved by zoonotic transmission of chimpanzee lentivirus to man around 1920. HIV-1 is now divided in four groups that had been transmitted by at least four independent events. HIV-2 originates from sooty mangabey monkeys in West Africa and was transmitted to man around 1940. For HIV-2 at least eight transmission events, forming the groups A to H, led to the ongoing epidemic. Regarding HIV and the AIDS epidemic it should be prevented that further animal viruses will be introduced to the human population.
